MARICOPA, Kern County — November 5, 2026. Election-night returns in the small town of Maricopa reveal a second close contest in addition to the City Council race. For three seats on the Maricopa Unified School District governing board, the county’s early tabulation puts Stacey Oglesby at 166 candidate selections, Kristin Blanco at 124, Breann Morse at 106 and Barry Lindaman at 86. The third-to-fourth reported margin is just 20 selections.

Three seats and four candidates

The important threshold in this contest is the reported position for the third available seat, not only the gap between the first two candidates. In a multi-seat school-board election, people may choose up to three candidates. Therefore the sum of individual candidate votes cannot be interpreted as unique ballots cast or the total number of registered district voters. The board’s exact electorate follows the school district’s geographic boundary, not necessarily Maricopa’s city limits.

Why this matters for public education

A local school board governs a district’s finances, facilities, policy and superintendent oversight under state rules. Residents with children in the school system may have a particular interest in how the board manages classrooms and school buildings. The election data do not tell us why people voted for any named candidate; candidate positions and future policy decisions require separate documentary reporting.

Maricopa’s council is even closer

In a separate election for two City Council seats, the county reports Cory Morse with 60 selections, Malinda Adams with 53 and John Crump Jr. with 51, a two-selection gap between second and third place. California58 has an independent city council report. The school district ballot and City Council ballot must not be mixed; they involve separate public bodies.

Results are still provisional

The Kern County Elections Division’s report is dated November 4 at 2:55:39 a.m. and is labeled the unofficial final election-night report. That means all initial precinct data were received, not that the registrar has finished reviewing every eligible mail or provisional ballot. The third-seat margin could change. Check the county’s official results dashboard for later releases, and await the legally completed canvass.
